MY
FIRST HARRY POTTER TOY DESIGNS
May
7, 2004
I first started working as a toy designer in 1995. Since then, I've gotten lucky enough to design kid's meal toys for Star Wars and resin dioramas of Marvel Comics superheroes. Then last summer, a friend of mine called to offer me a freelance job to design some toys for the next Harry Potter film. Finally, I get the chance to make some Potter toys. I concepted several ideas, based on cost restrictions and age-grading, and luckily, their client chose to order two toys from the presentation.
Shown below are the two toys that were produced. They'll be offered with special Harry Potter-themed decorated cakes you order at grocery store bakeries and the like.
The one on the left has a wind-up motor inside. When you wind up a pin on the other side and let him run across the table, Harry's torso rocks from left to right as he "chases" after the snitch. This final version was developed from concept art I submitted.
The one on the right was produced as-is from my original sketch. It has a pull-back motor inside and Buckbeak's wings flap as he rolls across the table. You can see the original concept illustration I did at this page.
